#creatorsearchinsights #createsightinsight “Les On Dit” is a story about jealousy, suspicion and the damage caused by rumours. Franco gives the main voice to a woman who is defending herself against another woman who believes she is trying to take her husband. The song was recorded with the female voices of Baniel Bambo and Nana Akumu, and was released in 1987. The woman begins by saying she will not waste her time endlessly defending herself. She explains that the other woman’s husband followed her to the salon and paid for her hair extensions. She insists that she did not pursue him—the man approached her himself. She even warns the jealous woman that she will become consumed by jealousy over something she did not cause. She then explains exactly what happened. The man smiled at her, she smiled back, and they simply went their separate ways. But the wife interprets the encounter differently and begins spreading the story throughout Kinshasa, accusing the woman of being involved with her husband. The narrator insists that she does not know the man and says that, when he tried to approach her, she looked at him angrily, leaving him surprised. The accusation nevertheless causes her real pain. She tells the jealous woman that she has done nothing wrong, yet her name is being shouted everywhere. She asks her to stop and even offers to return the money the husband gave her for her hair, because she regrets that accepting it has created such a misunderstanding. The confrontation then becomes more serious. The jealous woman follows her all the way to her parents' home, insults and humiliates her in front of them, and turns what the narrator considers an imaginary affair into a public scandal. The narrator feels deeply ashamed because she is being disgraced over something she says she never did. She repeatedly asks the woman to understand her pain: “Ezali ndenge na ngai te”—this is not my way. She says she respects her as a fellow woman and suggests that perhaps other people have contributed to the rumours. The man's smile, she insists, meant nothing; there was no serious relationship between them. In the final section, the narrator decides to carry her “cross” and let time reveal the truth. She believes that one day the jealous woman will discover what really happened and will come looking for her. The song therefore ends not with revenge, but with confidence that the truth will eventually expose the rumours for what they are. What makes “Les On Dit” powerful is that Franco turns an ordinary incident—a married woman's husband approaching another woman—into a wider commentary on jealousy, gossip, public humiliation and the danger of believing “what people say” without knowing the truth. The narrator's repeated defence shows how easily a harmless encounter can become a scandal once rumours take over. And on October 9, Congo Sounds Radio and House of Rumba will hold Franco Makiadi's 37th anniversary at Druids Lounge, Kangundo Road. #CongoSoundsRadio #RumbaWithoutBorders #Franco
