In August 2005, Tuninter Flight 1153 (an ATR 72 turboprop) was flying from Bari, Italy, to the resort island of Djerba in Tunisia. While cruising at 23,000 feet over the Mediterranean Sea, the aircraft's right engine suddenly sputtered and died. As the pilots frantically tried to restart it, the left engine also completely flamed out just two minutes later. The pilots were totally baffled. Their digital fuel gauges clearly showed they still had 1,800 kilograms of fuel left—more than enough to reach their destination. Desperately trying to glide the heavy, unpowered aircraft toward an emergency landing in Palermo, Sicily, they quickly realized they weren't going to make it. The pilots were forced to ditch the plane into the open sea. The ATR 72 broke apart upon hitting the water, tragically killing 16 of the 39 people on board. The investigation uncovered an incredibly simple but deadly maintenance error. The night before the flight, a mechanic had replaced the plane's Fuel Quantity Indicator (FQI). However, he mistakenly installed an FQI designed for the smaller ATR 42 model into this larger ATR 72. Because the smaller plane's tanks hold less fuel, the incorrect gauge misread the fuel levels, falsely telling the pilots they had plenty of gas when the tanks were actually bone dry. This tragic accident completely changed maintenance inventory protocols to ensure incompatible parts could never be physically plugged into the wrong aircraft again. #Tuninter1153 #AirCrashInvestigation #AviationHistory #FlightSafety #ATR72
