Dre :
I agree that fellowship is important, but I strongly disagree with the idea that choosing not to gather is mainly about avoiding accountability. That is far too simplistic.
We need to be honest about the reality of the modern church. How many leaders have used Christianity to advance their own agendas, manipulated people, and abused the trust of their followers? Simply being part of a church does not automatically mean someone is in a healthy or biblically sound environment.
There have been countless times when the Lord has helped me and some of my friends recognise toxic churches, false teaching, and doctrines that were not grounded in Scripture. In those situations, leaving was not about avoiding accountability—it was about remaining accountable to God and His Word.
Discernment matters. There are times when God removes people from environments that are spiritually harmful so that they can be brought back to the truth of Scripture. We should not blindly remain somewhere simply because we are told that attending church is always the right thing to do.
And attending many different churches does not necessarily mean someone has been exposed to sound biblical teaching. Many people have spent years in churches where leaders themselves were teaching traditions, opinions, or doctrines that were not faithful to Scripture.
So the real question is not simply, “Are you gathering?” The real question is, “What is being taught when you gather?”
What is the church actually teaching today? Is it teaching Christ, Scripture, repentance, faith, and obedience to God? Or is it becoming increasingly focused on traditions, denominational doctrines, personalities, programs, and the opinions of men?
There are far too many conflicting doctrines and traditions being taught in churches today, while the centrality of Christ and the authority of Scripture can be pushed into the background.
Fellowship is important, but fellowship without truth is not enough. Gathering together is not the ultimate goal—Christ is. Scripture is. Truth is.
We should never prioritise belonging to a church over remaining faithful to Christ and grounded in His Word.
