I think they are thinking that metal is sturdier than wood, and there would typically be multiple layers of protection. A throwing knife isn’t piercing plate, mail, and a gambeson. It likely wouldn’t do it for just mail and a gambeson. Throwing knives were always meant to be used as a distraction to allow you to close the distance and cause some minor damage as a bonus.

as someone who had been hit by a throwing knife. no the first one might not stop you depending on placement but 2 or 3 probably will once the pain sets in if your not dead already.

video games. most video games treat throwing knives like a secondary low dmg weapon. I think AC1 if you were undetected it was an instant kill but detected it became useless and used more to stagger

Although I agree that a knife would hurt and probably stop most, human bone is a lot tougher then most people think. Id wager that a knife thrown from a distance aimed at a moving head wont penetrate the skullbone that easily.

this is misleading tho. The throwing knife is rigid no bend and that's why it went deeper than the rapier. Once you throw the knife that's it that's all it's energy but with the rapier it's backed by you and it will do way more. Also humans aren't wood. we're bendy and soft so when you hit someone they will move and the impact will be absorbed. I'm not saying it won't do damage but not nearly as much as you're making it seem. especially if you're wearing any kind of protective gear.
