When I was a kid, I thought that Gotham was New York at night and Metropolis was New York during the day. Then as I got older, I saw Chicago as Metropolis and Detroit as Gotham. But then I saw this map from I think a Justice League comic from the late 70s. I also read that for a while Smallville was originally in NJ. I don’t think Smallville’s location was solidified as being in Kansas until the show Smallville.

i always assumed Gotham was New York City and Metropolis was Philadelphia or something, maybe even Jersey. i’ve felt like Gotham and Metropolis were sister cities. Gotham gets the more street level and psychotic crimes while Metropolis gets the more bigger than life crimes like giant monsters and stuff. either way Gotham is NYC, idc.

Also Gotham city cannot be Chicago because Chicago exists in the dc universe. It's where Jim Gordon is from.

Metropolis was in Kansas in all of one piece of media, Smallville. In every other piece of media it is portrayed as an east-coast city. Sometimes its Manhattan, other times its in Delaware.

I believe Metropolis is Cleveland. Gotham is in New Jersey. Fawcett city is in Wisconsin. I have correct opinions. I've also always thought it would make more sense if Central City was St. Louis.

The name Gotham City literally comes from a nickname for New York City and it’s not a “new thing” that DC is trying to establish Gotham has been confirmed to be in New Jersey since the 70s

Gotham is clearly Chicago… I didn’t even think that was a discussion. Even their bad guys are very Al Capone, The Untouchables vibes.
