Just to add - I think because this scene plays out in the first episode, we are INITIALLY meant to assume he is looking for a ring. But by the time we revisit this scene, we now know that isn’t the case. So I believe it was deliberately made to look like he was checking if there was a ring for the first time we see the scene.

here's the thing it's supposed to LOOK like he's looking for the ring cause that part has to play in episode one, he is looking for defensive wounds but he's doing so in a way to trick the audience, I understand the confusion.

They would have shot it that way purely to make it look like he was looking for a ring at the end of episode 1, but yeah, this makes sense in universe

it's important to remember that they changed the episode order at some point in development iirc 3 and 6 and 5 and 7 were swapped originally so John checking the hand wouldn't have been seen as unusual because we wouldn't have seen how things ended in 2016

I don’t think he was looking for defensive wounds, John’s pretty smart and with the cold it would be harder for his body to bruise up swell as the snow and cold weather would act as a anti inflammatory, him checking to make sure he still doesn’t have his ring makes more sense
