Oh my gosh! I think when you get to higher end weddings, it becomes more of an expectation for a wedding team to realize that they may not be able to share their photos. If this was communicated at the beginning, I maybe would have asked if I could share detailed photos of your day that don’t necessarily have your guests or your faces in it. These types of things are specified in contracts all the time. There’s either no sharing of the photos, sharing of a few images that the couple approves of that have their faces or potentially sharing, detailed photos of your day that really only tag the wedding team itself. African-American owned business or not. The majority of these businesses are all small businesses. I 100% see what you’re saying and from a photographer perspective if they really wanted to, they could’ve added an additional charge for not using the photos…. But a highly ranked wedding menu just doesn’t make sense.

Okay as a photographer, your photographer did the right thing in coming to you first as lots of vendors will sidestep the couple themselves in order to get the photos. I also charge vendors for usage of my images. The venue should’ve respected you not wanting them to use the photos though. I would say for vendors as a whole being able to share photos is useful for showcasing experience, versatility and breadth, particularly when you’re starting out. It helps with future bookings (it’s tough out here honestly) and allows future clients to know what you can do and how in case there are doubts. That’s not to say that this shouldn’t be done in a manner that’s respectful and transparent to the couple x

As a photographer it's valid. I sometimes asks once, when its not clear, because it is essential for me getting my bookings and I want to show realistic work. If someone wants to keep them private, I don't ask. I also never ask twice.

I do photography on the side and I only post when I shoot models or volunteers to grow my portfolio. when I have clients I ask and if they say yes cool but if they say no cool too. Respect their choice no need to push for a different response.

Not to change the topic, but hairstylists be doing this as well. I ALWAYS ask “is it required for photos to be taken for service”. Because if so, you will not be touching my head lol. I’m not a model. I’m paying for a service.

I understand not wanting them to use your images, but you should actually communicate that. You’re essentially expecting them to read your mind on why you’re not responding. Emails are not replied to/ not seen for so many reasons. So it’s not uncommon for a follow up email to be sent.

They’re being shady/annoying, but instead of ignoring just tell them no in writing, then if they somehow still find a way to get them from the photographer you can point back to where you did NOT consent. Or if you want something in exchange for their usage of the photos suggest it and see what they say!
