Folks across southern Oklahoma and far North Texas need to remain weather-aware overnight as conditions become increasingly favorable for a few severe storms and possibly a tornado or two tonight into early Thursday morning! While strong to severe storms are possible throughout today, the tornado risk could actually INCREASE AFTER SUNSET as a strengthening low-level jet brings stronger winds just above the surface. This will increase low-level wind shear, creating an environment more favorable for rotating storms and possibly a couple tornadoes. The greatest concern is between 10 PM tonight and 4 AM Thursday CDT, when forecast guidance suggests another organized line of storms could move through parts of southern Oklahoma and North Texas. If this line develops, strengthening low-level wind shear could support embedded circulations capable of producing tornadoes. Any lingering supercells or organized storm segments could also intensify as the nighttime low-level jet strengthens, and interacts with a pseudo warm front that may be lifting north from the Red River. This pseudo warm front is the outflow boundary from the storms across central Oklahoma earlier today. Damaging straight-line winds will also be a concern with stronger storms, particularly if a well-organized line develops overnight. Additionally, the flash flooding risk could increase as repeated rounds of storms produce heavy rain over areas that may have already received significant rain earlier today. The overnight timing is especially concerning because many folks will be asleep when the tornado risk could be increasing. Tornadoes embedded within lines of thunderstorms can develop rapidly, sometimes with limited warning time. This makes it especially important for residents across southern Oklahoma and North Texas to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight. There is still uncertainty regarding the exact placement and magnitude of the tornado risk. Much will depend on how storms evolve this afternoon and evening, how much instability remains available overnight, whether another organized line of storms develops, and the evolution of the boundary🌪️
