Freshwater may fill the ground as deep as 10,000 to 13,000 feet beneath the Great Salt Lake's Farmington Bay, according to a University of Utah study. Researchers flew electromagnetic equipment under a helicopter in February 2025 to map where the lake's surface brine gives way to freshwater below.
"We were able to answer the question of how deep this potential reservoir is, and what its spatial extent is beneath the eastern lake margin," said Michael Zhdanov, a distinguished professor of geology and geophysics and the study's lead author. The study, published in Scientific Reports, is the first to show this survey method can detect freshwater under the lake's salty surface layer, Zhdanov said. The work started after reed-covered mounds, each 50 to 100 meters across, appeared on Farmington Bay's dry lakebed in recent years. One of those mounds sits right where freshwater pushes up through a gap in the layer under the lake, the survey showed. Co-author Bill Johnson, a geology and geophysics professor, said the freshwater appears to enter toward the lake's interior instead of its edges, which is the opposite of what hydrologists would expect. Johnson wants to learn whether the water could help wet dust hot spots on the lake's 800 square miles of exposed lakebed. "A first-order objective is to understand whether we could use this freshwater to wet dust hotspots and douse them in a meaningful way without perturbing the freshwater system too much," Johnson said. The helicopter flew 154 miles of survey lines over Farmington Bay and the north end of Antelope Island. Zhdanov said his team could survey the lake's entire 1,500-square-mile footprint. The Utah Department of Natural Resources and the Great Salt Lake Commissioners' Office helped fund the research. #greatsaltlake #utahnews #utahisrad
