@ianisfun: The benefits of sunlight seem to far outweigh the mortality risk from skin cancer, by about 75:1. Thank you to Rowan Jacobsen for sharing his time with me, and @Jonathan Jarecki for some visuals! Sources: 1) "In Defense of Sunlight" (Rowan Jacobsen) - Thank you Rowan!! I'm such a fanboy 2) Brighter nights and darker days predict higher mortality risk: A prospective analysis of personal light exposure in >88,000 individuals (PNAS) #sunlight #health #longevity #skincancer

This sounds like a glass of red wine thing all over again. If you care about health enough to get checked for melanoma, you’re more likely to live longer for plethora of reasons.

I spend a lot of time in the sun, but I have vitiligo and because of that my chances of developing skin cancer is actually a lot LOWER than the average person. It's an autoimmune disease in the skin, so any cancerous cells gets dealt with quickly.

I spent my entire summer outside in my garden. I planted sunflowers along the entire fence so I had a pretty 32x24 hidden secret garden. I spent hours with my feet and hands in the dirt, thriving in the sun. A couple of weeks ago I took a nap in the grass with my dog and chickens. I just laid down, put my sun hat over my face, and fell asleep. My entire being thrives in the growing season. Maybe I need to think about getting a sun lamp for the winter. 🖤

Not applicable in Australia. If you spend a lot of time out in the sun, it's not basal cell you have to worry about, it's melanoma

If you walk into the doctor's office you don't have a longer potential lifespan because of the diagnosis. If that were true, your argument would be specifically that the diagnosis itself extends your lifespan.

I totally buy that it’s good to get some sunlight but I fear this will lead to people not wearing sunscreen - and while basal cell carcinoma may not be that deadly, melanoma sure can be, and it’s primarily driven by UV exposure

live in Thailand… You don’t know how a fraction of sunlight affects my mental state 😂 It’s hot, burning, almost blind sensation, i really feel like spending time in the sun makes me a day shorter of life.. emotionally 🤣
