TOLUWANISING'S DEATH: THE ABSENTEE FATHER, THE SPERM-DONOR MENTALITY, PATRIARCHY, AND MY BIGGEST CONCERN FOR HIS WIFE AND TWO DAUGHTERS. When Toluwanising died, I didn't show any emotion publicly. I never posted his picture on WhatsApp, Facebook, or any of my social media platforms to mourn him. My wife was devastated. She was so sad that she lost her appetite that day. About three days after his death, my wife asked me why I hadn't shown any emotion despite my personal connection with him. Yes, I had a connection with Toluwanising. I knew him and his wife long before he became successful, back when he was eating, drinking, and sleeping in poverty. His PA, Gbolabo, who was interviewed by the BBC, is my blood brother. These are people I know personally. I told my wife that my silence was my own way of mourning him. He was already gone. I wasn't going to suddenly start posting his pictures and writing long epistles about someone whose picture I had never posted while he was alive. But I told my wife that I had two major concerns: his young wife and his two precious daughters. This young woman had known and shared her life with Toluwanising for more than ten years. How was she going to cope with losing her husband so suddenly? How would she raise those two little girls without their father? Those were the questions troubling me. My second concern was even more serious. I told my wife, Toluwanising came from a very, very poor family, and I know what that mean when a successful young man dies. I feared that relatives who had little or no meaningful relationship with him while he was alive might suddenly appear and begin making demands concerning his property, his home, and the family he left behind. And before I could say Jack, the interviews started. First, his father, whom I consider a chronic absentee father, began granting interviews to bloggers. Then came an uncle who, from what I know, never met Toluwanising while he was alive and only went to see him at the mortuary. Suddenly, this uncle became a family spokesperson, publicly asking Nigerians to help them find out what killed their son. This absentee uncle begin to interrogation a grieving widow. This man was questioning why the wife and others were watching television. He was asking whether she recognised her father-in-law, why she had not been calling him, whether she knew where he lived, and why she did not contact him immediately after her husband died. Can you imagine? A woman has just lost her husband. Two little girls have just lost their father. Instead of allowing this family to grieve, people are already questioning the widow's conduct and relationship with her husband's relatives. This is where patriarchy begins to show its ugly face. This is how it starts in many Nigerian families. First, they question the widow. Then they begin judging her actions. Before you know it, she is being portrayed as a bad wife who failed to recognise or respect her husband's family. And once that narrative gains ground, people may begin to feel entitled to interfere in her decisions, her home, and everything her husband left behind. From everything I personally know and have heard, I strongly doubt that Toluwanising father ever spent 30 consecutive days with Toluwanising after his mother died when he was six months old. I can categorically say that Toluwanising's wife spent more meaningful time with him than his father the stupid uncle and several other relatives combined. Yet now, she is the one being publicly questioned about whether she knew her father-in-law's address. What kind of patriarchal entitlement is this? Let me say this to anyone who may be attempting to use family hierarchy, tradition, or patriarchy to intimidate Toluwanising's wife. There are people who know this family. There are people who knew Toluwanising before his success. There are people who understand the relationships that existed long before the cameras and interviews. I am one of those #toluwanisingsmusic
