But is it too early to celebrate? It’s Day 5. Ash Dykes is still out there. Five days ago he pushed an inflatable kayak into the Sangha River in the Central African Republic and started paddling toward Mossaka more than 700 kilometres of pure wilderness. No roads. No hospitals. No second chances. So far he’s already faced the early chaos: lost bags, visa problems, border detours, and the constant threat of what lives in that dark water. He’s passed hippo territory. He’s walked into the rainforest with the Ba’Aka people and stood metres away from critically endangered forest elephants. Today he’s looking for silverbacks. The views are beautiful. Vast jungle on both sides. Mist rising off the river. Boats moving slowly through the green. But beauty in the Congo Basin is never free. Crocodiles are still there. Hippos are still territorial. Malaria, parasites, and infection are still waiting. And he’s only a small part of the way through a journey that will take weeks. Millions of people are watching every update, refreshing, praying, joking, panicking. Some already said he was dead. Others said he has a death wish. A few claimed he’s on a secret mission. Meanwhile Ash is just paddling. One stroke at a time. Documenting everything. Living the story in real time. The Congo Basin hasn’t beaten him yet. But this is still only Day 5. Is it too early to celebrate… or are we just holding our breath a little longer? #A#AshDykesC#CongoBasinP#Project6D#Day5S#SanghaRiver
