You can technically return the stones anywhere in their respective universes, as long as he returns it at the exact time it was taken

You can’t put it back in the same moment because it’s not time travel it’s some bullshit alternate dimension that isn’t caught up with this one so surely if he returned it the next day then it would be the next day in the other dimension. Also when he’s sat on the bench as an old guy he would have had to have grown old in the other dimension and then returned to this one at some point

There's no reason it has to be "exactly" when it was taken. It just can't be missing when it's needed. And he could have gone to the Ancient One and had her use the time stone to revert the stones back into their "cases."
