The most successful beverage rebrand in the 21st century… poppi. Did you know that before they were called poppi, their brand name was actually Mother Beverage? In 2015, founders Alison and Stephen Ellsworth had this idea to create a prebiotic soda with apple cider vinegar, containing health benefits while still tasting good. They started selling them at farmers markets and the initial drink branding was very artisanal, the design felt stern, and it was sold in glass bottles, which somewhat worked for the small audience they were targeting but wasn’t scalable. Fast forward to 2018, they appear on Shark Tank. After their pitch, only one shark, Rohan Oza (AKA the “brandfather” who was also responsible for other successful beverage brands like Vitaminwater & Smartwater) offered a $400k investment with a 25% stake. And it was Rohan who said they needed to rebrand because their current branding just wasn’t working and quite frankly, sucked. So they renamed to ’poppi’, had a new can format, new logo, updated market positioning to pop culture, basically everything got a completely new makeover. It was alot more modern, Gen Z, and vibrant. They went for fun, bold pops of color with simple yet fun illustrations of the flavors. Their pop-art style is what made the cans stand out on shelves and appeal to an even broader and younger audience. Combine that with their digital-first approach and strong influencer marketing strategy and the brand just took off especially on TikTok in 2020. All this to say, there is so much value and power to strategic branding and packaging design more than people realize. You can have a great product, but if the overall branding doesn’t align, sales won’t convert well. This is what ultimately led to Pepsico acquiring poppi earlier this year for $1.95 billion dollars, making them the most successful rebrand in the beverage market. (Also, I’m obsessed with their Doc Pop and Strawberry Lemon flavors. 😋) Have you tried poppi before? #branddesign #rebrand #branddesigner #graphicdesigner #rebranding
