As Christians, we can have assurance of salvation because our assurance is grounded in Jesus’s finished work and God’s promises, not our ability to predict whether we’ll persevere. John literally says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Jesus says whoever believes “has eternal life” and “has passed from death to life” (John 5:24). So if Christians can’t have assurance, why would scripture specifically tell believers that these things were written so that we may know we have eternal life?
