After 2020, “peaceful reunification” was completely off the table. Taiwan knows that their way of life is 100% finished if they accept anything after seeing how Beijing crushed Hong Kong

You bring up hong cong but china didn’t hold up there end of the deal there so why should Taiwan trust China?

This is a bit of a disjointed argument, you are throwing a few different things here and the result is confusing. I'm interested in your views but this feels like a few different the topics shoved together. The question of the role of the US, the question of what China actually wants, the question of what the people of Taiwan want (and how that's shifted), and what is likely to occur

To be honest the best situation is probably a continuing of the Status Quo. Almost every poll conducted has the status quo as the most popular. If things continue as is maybe eventually Taiwan will slowly integrate over time. No island, regardless of its economic or political value, is worth up ending a nations entire economy.

How many million dead would you still think that "unification" (annexation) would be a good thing? What's your limit.

It isn't unique to China that civil wars happen creating two states that don't recognize each other. They each have been/are independent and have the right to declare so if they want. The only reason Taiwan hasn't formally declared is it would hurt China's ego so much that they threaten war

forgive me if you've addressed this before, but can I ask what legitimate claim does China have over Taiwan? my understanding is that Taiwan is basically the exiled government from before the CCP took control or China, but why does China believe it is entitled to Taiwan? there have been plenty of countries that have split in two after a civil war, I don't really understand why China has a special right to Taiwan if the people of Taiwan desire to be independent. sorry if anything in my question is ignorant of the situation, I am not particularly familiar with the situation but I am asking sincerely.

You guys never stick to your deal. You didn’t with Hong Kong, so why should Taiwan believe you? Let them be.

When do you think we will get the first signs of who Chairman Xi’s successor will be, and where do you think this successor is today?

The Republic of China (ROC) claims to be the true and legitimate government of China, just as the People’s Republic of China (PRC) claims the same. The difference is, the PRC controls mainland China, while the ROC controls a small island. Taiwan is a province both claim but only the ROC governs. If the people of Taiwan want to become an independent country, which is their right under the principles of national self determination, then they need to officially and irrevocably give up any claims to any sovereignty to mainland china. Effectively, they would be dissolving the ROC and creating the Republic of Taiwan. However, the PRC will never agree to this because they only see Taiwan as a wayward province and would view any movement towards the creation of Taiwanese state as illegitimate and irrelevant (which is how every government treats such things when a wayward province unilaterally declares independence). There is no good solution to resolve this issue, hence why the status quo remains.

China always goes on and this island but where is the talk of the parts of Russia that actually were stolen from China. You say the big bad west stops you get an Island back but give Russia a free pass because you like them. Until you start talking about Russia the same way you’ll get no sympathy from me.

You bring up culture but culturally Taiwan has spent more of human history independent than it has otherwise. In the days of empire as I recall the island was actually only part of china proper for about 100 years the rest it was independent or part of another empire. You say history means democracy doesn’t matter but the history actually supports independence
