I like triangles the most 🫪 as a pre-med, so many parts of our body are triangular & that just makes more sense to me.

Maybe it is needed because the depth in your drawing kind of sucks - the whole point of the boxes and simplifying to shapes is perspective and making it look 3d, not because they literally look like the body

I wish art tutorial creators/artists in general would give more in depth commentary, instead of telling beginner & self taught artists to just solely focus on simplifying poses with shapes. Especially for beginners, I’d recommend gesture studies before I tell them to hammer out tons of cubes and shapes lol.

I agree, I think it works for some people but like for others the 3D shapes just don’t work for me, what I find helpful is breaking down the piece a bit more into maybe 2D parts or shapes, or just focusing on the whole piece itself and following the flow of it if that makes sense?

i think you take it too literally. the box is just a vague skeleton, a scheme. you build the actual complexity of a human physique on top of it. the box is not gonna stay there till the end.

I’m gonna play devils advocate here and explain from an art school perspective in art classes that I took we were told to use cubes because they are 3-D shapes just like the human body. But breaking down the human body into shapes, gives you a form before you render anatomy books will tell you this art teachers will tell you this, but everybody learns in their own way.

i learned that some poses come together better when u visualize the empty space around the pose.

i spent so much time drawing boxes and perspective and none of it ever improved my art, at all. Every art tutorial tries to push it on you so much, but it’s so tough working backwards from boxes -> vague limb shapes and bends. What actually made my art improve was drawing from reference images, studying how limbs bent and move, and proportions as I drew these. Then, I could apply what I learned from the study to my own unique art

if you don't have reference the boxes are there for structure

Yeah I dont suggest boxes but acknowledging the perspective through surface lines on any shape cut in half is rlly helpful to beginners

Breaking the human body down into shapes is helpful because it helps beginners visualize figures/drawings in 3 dimensions. When you can’t do that 3D shapes are pretty essential. For actual dynamic poses once an artist already thinks 3 dimensionally it becomes more of a hindrance.

im still new at fogure drawing but what i do is basically work and focus more on curves than anything and eventually it creares a fluid whole drawing

Yea I think in general ur supposed to do gesture drawings before breaking any form down into 3D shapes, I think a lot of inexperienced artists rely to heavily on quick TikTok tutorials that tell them limited information because they prefer quick videos rather than longer lessons that would actually help them

I use triangles and circles :3 but most of the time if it’s QUICK! It’s a line skeleton and than important curves in the pose 😂😂

the squares and shapes never helped me until after everything clicked, and now i CAN do that to help, but it didnt while i was learning.

I’ve used cylinders, spirals, boxes, and extra lines and I def agree that my poses end up looking way more stiff than the actual reference. I think it’s helpful to learn and sketch your own poses, but to practice I prefer drawing the action line first and then taking 10 seconds to draw the other features. Idk the rushed fluid lines makes it look more fluid and keeps me from spending too much time on the pose itself 👻💕

Skippy :
Learn how to take fluid lines to your advantage, draw the movement of the pose and the limbs, then, after you sketch out the movement with curves and circles, you can finally add the structure, ie, now you add the boxes of the limbs, while also keeping the curves you want and adding the structure you need
