I've heard people say he was really stupid for not making the scientists give him the cure before handing it over to them but I think it really speaks to his nature as a person at the end he spent so much time trying to do the right thing for total strangers that he expected total strangers to do the right thing for him but they let him down.

Never forget, for half the movie he protected the package because he believed it was an organ that could save a life. It wasn’t until the second half he found out it was the antidote. Dude was a hero. It may not have ended well but that dude is HIM.
