@complexneurology: 💡Did you know there are four types of Chiari Malformation? 🤯 Each type varies in severity and symptoms, impacting people in unique ways. 🔎 From Type I, the most common, often discovered in teens and adults, to Type IV, a rare and severe form, understanding these differences is essential for effective care. Look at the image to see the classification for each type. 🩺 🔷 Chiari Malformation Type I Most common form. Occurs when the lower part of the cerebellum called the cerebellar tonsils pushes into the opening between the skull and spinal cord called the foramen magnum. 🔷 Chiari Malformation II Both cerebellar and brainstem tissue extend into the foramen magnum. The structure connecting the two sides of the cerebellum may be absent or underdeveloped. 🔷 Chiari Malformation Type III Severe condition where parts of the cerebellum and brainstem extend through an opening at the base of the skull. Additionally, membranes surrounding the brain or spinal cord may also protrude. 🔷 Chiari Malformation Type IV Extremely rare condition characterized by an underdeveloped or partially formed cerebellum, a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. In this type, while the cerebellum remains in its usual position, some parts are absent, and areas of the skull or spinal cord may be exposed. ✨September is Chiari Malformation Awareness Month. 📲 Share and repost to raise awareness! #ComplexNeurology #ChiariMalformationAwarenessMonth #ChiariMalformation #ChiariAwareness #complexneurologicalconditions
