@ibnjawad6: The tower is officially known as the Makkah Royal Clock Tower and forms the centerpiece of the Abraj Al-Bait Endowment complex. The complex stands immediately beside Masjid al-Haram, making the tower extremely prominent for pilgrims arriving in Makkah. The tower reaches approximately 601 metres (1,972 feet) in height and has 120 floors. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s database, it is currently the tallest building in Makkah and one of the world’s tallest completed buildings. Construction began in 2002, and the tower was completed in 2012. It was developed as part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project, a large development intended to provide accommodation and other facilities close to the Grand Mosque for people visiting Makkah. 🕰️ Why is the clock so enormous? The most striking feature isn’t simply the height of the tower, but the four enormous clock faces positioned near its upper section. There is one clock face on each side of the tower, meaning the clock can be seen from different directions around central Makkah. The four faces are among the largest and highest-positioned clock faces in the world. The scale is difficult to appreciate from photographs because the tower itself is enormous. The clock is placed hundreds of metres above ground, so when you stand around the Haram area and look toward it, the clock face appears gigantic against the surrounding buildings. The clock also functions as an important visual time reference for the area. Because of its extraordinary height, it can be seen from considerable distances around Makkah. 🌙 The illuminated clock At night, the clock becomes even more distinctive. The clock faces are illuminated using approximately one million LED lights, producing the characteristic bright appearance that can be seen from around the city. The illumination makes the tower particularly prominent after sunset. This is one reason photographs of Makkah at night often have the Clock Tower dominating the skyline behind or beside Masjid al-Haram. The tower therefore has a very different appearance depending on the time of day: Daytime: The enormous clock faces, Arabic inscriptions, architectural details and tower structure are clearly visible. Nighttime: The illuminated clock faces become a huge luminous landmark above the Haram.
