The Story Behind the Iconic Photo of Dr. Zbigniew Religa In 1987, after a grueling 23-hour heart transplant surgery, Dr. Zbigniew Religa anxiously monitored his patient’s vitals, while an exhausted assistant dozed off nearby. Despite Poland’s limited medical resources at the time, the operation was a success. The patient, Tadeusz Zytkiewicz, lived for 30 more years, passing away in 2017. Photographed by James Stanfield for National Geographic, the image was named the best photo of 1987 and later ranked among the magazine’s 100 greatest photos. Dr. Religa, a pioneer in Polish heart transplants, died of lung cancer in 2009. His funeral was attended by both Stanfield and Zytkiewicz, who held the iconic photo during the service. Rest in peace, Dr. Zbigniew Religa and Tadeusz Zytkiewicz. #story #hope #photography #fyp
