@joshtheancient: Mexico City is built directly over the Aztec Capital City called Tenochtitlan. Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325 AD by the Aztecs or Mexica and flourished until the Spanish Conquest from 1519-1521. The Aztecs main pyramid Templo mayor was leveled and repurposed to build the metropolitan Cathedral in the Zocalo. The modern day zocalo is the exact same central square that was used by the Aztecs. Modern main streets and the layout of Mexico City are still in the same location as they were during the reign of the Aztecs. #azteca #mexica #ancient #History #mesoamerica
