There is a theory that the memory stolen from Manang is her memory of the friendship she had with Lola. Lola and Manang were close friends during Lola’s time in Nakali. Manang and Lola traded that memory so Lola can go back home. And since Batiba is a bit greedy as shown in the movie, she did not only ask for the memory of Lola with Manang, but also of Manang’s friendship with Lola. With Manang losing that memory too, she became cold and confused about herself and so she turned bad. I find this theory quite plausible because of 2 things: (1) Batiba only steals memories in exchange for mortals to go back home. It wasn’t mentioned in the movie that Batiba also steals memories from engkantos too. That could mean only Manang is the only engkanto with a missing memory. (2) Lola shares stories to Raissa and Jo about how Nakali is a magical and a happy island filled with engkantos. If Lola knew Manang is really evil and an engkanto that would even hurt and kill mortals, I don’t think she would still describe Nakali as a place worth looking for and with Raissa and Jo’s lives at stake.

the thing that is so solemn about this portrayal of the manananggal is that, according to history, women who assist in a pregnant woman's birth were portrayed by the Spanish colonizers (or the patriarchy once Philippines got colonized) as viscera sucker. A portrayal that contradicts their role as midwives. So to see Manang so peaceful (when she got her memories back), for mw, kinda feels like doing justice to the women in our history wrongfully portrayed as monsters. I know this is not part of the film but I just can't help but ponder about it

Another Theory I think is that she used to Be a Diwata, when the crystal was taken away from her thats when she became a Mananangal, Hence if there would be a prequel to this she wouldnt be the Antagonist anymore
