Picture this. Fat Joe hangs with the Wu Tang Clan. A racist cop pulls up on them. Is the racist cop gonna say “You NWords stand over here and you Puerto Rican stand over here” or is the racist cop gonna call ALL of them NWords?!? Now Picture this. A Mexican and a bunch of Black Americans together and the racist cop pulls up on them. The racist cop is DEFINITELY gonna call the Mexican a Mexican and the Black Americans the Nword. Racist cannot or chose not to differentiate Puerto Ricans from Black Americans. Puerto Ricans have been getting called NWords by Racist since the transatlantic slave trade began. So no Fat Joe cannot “un Ni*ga” himself whenever he pleases. That’s not how racism works in the U.S.

While African Americans define being Black by skin color, we define it by our country's culture. I am Dominican, and I am identified by the customs and culture I grew up with, not by my skin color.

The U.S has a completely different way to see race and ethnicity with doesn't apply anywhere else, and this is not a good thing at all

I think the problem is that people try to define a reality they’re not part of, let Afro and mix Latinos speak for themselves and from the reality they live in. That’s why there’s no male feminist (or shouldn’t be)

Completely agree with y’all on this take. However, if I may introduce a conversation that is filled with nuances and is a lot more complicated and convoluted, is what is, better yet, how would we define Afro-Latinos/Latinas, vs White Latinos, or Mestizos or mulatto or Lobos/Chinos/Coyotes? I raise this because unlike the States where race mixing was viewed down on. It was encouraged in Latino America by the Spanish to “bre-d out” the “lower class” and make them pure white (it takes approximately 5 generations of mixing with pure white Spaniards, there’s a really good book about this called, Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence) So for a lot of Latinos, they are a mixture of Indigenous, Spanish, and Black with some you know French, Arabic, and Asian.

I’m Afro-Latina but all people see is Latina. Whenever I tell them I have African blood in me (through my dad’s side) they never believe me. Growing up I’ve always been told “you don’t look black.” Well no I’m not dark skinned but I’m AFRO-Latina 😭 I don’t have to be a specific shade omg
