Araragi is altruistic person but not fully because his cowardness and selfishness holds him back in this sense. For example in the kizumonogatari movies Araragi decides to give Shinobu his blood eventhough knowing she was a monster, and could hurt others if he did that. Secondly later on Araragi doesn't kill Shinobu even when Shinobu already had planned to die to Araragi in their battle. Even Araragi himself knows this is a selfish thing to do, and he should have killed her but due to his selfishness and cowardness he couldn't do it.
