Numbering around 4,000 people, they live in three main valleys of Chitral: Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir. *[Cut to: Kalash women in traditional dress, colorful embroidery, beaded headdresses]* What makes the Kalash different? Their culture, their religion, and their festivals. The Kalash follow an ancient polytheistic faith. They worship nature — the sun, fire, water, and mountains. Their priests, called _Dehar_, perform rituals in open-air shrines called _Jeshtakhan_. Unlike the surrounding region, their traditions predate Islam and are believed to have roots in ancient Indo-Aryan culture. *[Cut to: Festival footage – dancing, drums, people in circle]* Their life revolves around festivals. - *Chilam Joshi* in May celebrates the arrival of spring and new life. - *Uchao* in August marks the harvest. - *Chawmos* in December is their most sacred festival — a 14-day celebration of light, purification, and the coming of the new year. They grow wheat, maize, and walnuts on terraced slopes. Their houses are made of wood and stone, built to survive earthquakes and heavy snow. But life isn’t easy.
