400 ปีก่อนช่วงฤดูน้ำหลาก อยุธยากลายเป็นเมืองทะเลสาบขนาดใหญ่ ผู้คนนก็เปลี่ยนจากตลาดบนบกเป็นตลาดน้ำ ตรงไหนเป็นที่ดอนน้ำท่วมไม่ถึงคนก็ย้ายไปตั้งตลาดกัน แล้วก็ค้าขายกันตามปกติ สำหรับชาวตะวันตก น้ำท่วมคือภัยพิบัติ แต่ตามบันทึกของลาลูแบร์เขียนไว้ว่าชาวอยุธยาปรับตัวได้อย่างน่าทึ่ง ทุกวันนี้ถึงเวลาจะผ่านไปนานแต่ดีเอ็นเอของชาวอยุธยาไม่เคยจางหายไปไหนแต่มันถูกส่งต่อมาให้ชาวสยาม อยู่กับน้ำ ปรับตัวเข้ากับน้ำ
