Rewatching rn while my fiancé watches for the first time. He asked “what are they even gonna do with this Zach guy? He has weirdly a lot of screen time for someone who’s so nothing. Unfortunately Zach was based on/inspired by a real person in the author's life, based on her real life friend. Sometimes the people we fall in love with aren't always the best starting out or redeemable, the author was also likely influenced by her first time meeting him and stories she heard by her friend. This person proved that in many ways. I hope that real life Zach has made strides in his life to be a good husband and father to his "lane".

nope Zach gets way too much hate, he was douchey in the beginning because Dave was supposed to be Lanes epic love. Actor left they gave Zach Dave's storyline, thats why they made him nice. Alot of it tracks actually, Zach wouldn't have had that onstage freak out about Brian writing Lane a song but Dave would've (I love Dave but Zachs original character was just too whatever no shame kinda deal). We do get to see alot of genuinely good things from Zach, when they moved him and Brian took one shelf together and gave Laine one on her own, that was the first time in her entire life ANYONE had actually given her a space for the real her, Zach was completely cool and so fun with the whole Korean wedding thing, AND he was not only great throughout her whole pregnancy but when he finally got a call to go on his dream tour he didn't even consider leaving her home. when she said her and the babies couldn't go he immediately said I'll have to tell them I can't, she told him to go. I love Zach, they were both young he made mistakes but all around he was a phenomenal husband to her. he also never once pressured her to have sex.
