@sarah.gingell: Also as care aids it’s within our “scope” to help housekeeping, dietary, maintenance, activities etc. the only thing we can’t do it nursing. yet none of the other departments ( besides nursing) is able to help us!! so it’s always us helping but never getting the help back!! it’s so frustrating and adding on to the already heavy work load that we have!!!! #healthcare #cna #careaid #hca

You must work for a private company because I only experienced this when I worked for a private care home (worst place I’ve ever worked)… so glad I left!never again!!

This is why nurses were pushing for our working short premium that they took away from us to be given back, instead they decided to take our benefits 🙃 I love the patients and I love being a nurse but the responsibility they put on us as nurses and HCAs is unbearable. HCAs are so grossly underpaid too

I’ve been with viha in nursing for 14 years. This speaks volumes. Unfortunately in all these years it’s never gotten better. So frustrating. You are expected to work without breaks, to push yourself to your max. I feel this post so much. You do eventually have to step away and prioritize yourself though or you’ll get sick.

I worked in ltc years ago, and this is exactly why our facility unionized. Understaffing is unsafe for staff and for residents. Once the union came in, there were more staff with better divided duties (e.g. care aids were no longer responsible for laundry or housekeeping). Residents were better supervised, and staff were more available to help them, so there were fewer falls by residents trying to do things for themselves. An orthopaedic surgeon told me he saw an instant decline in the number of injuries from residents from our ltc. Also, pay went up.

It’s insane. It’s super bad in Nova Scotia as well. I’ve seen 1 care aide for like 10 patients or more. Something should be done!

It’s not fair to you all or to the residents, more thought/budget should be allowed, hire more people as backup for people who have to have time off for illness, I just know the residents appreciate all you do❤️❤️

I’d have to rush to get all residents in the dining room and then we would have to serve the food, and then clean it up and get our residents out. And then get them into bed. A psw does SO much. It’s exhausting. I get what you mean understaff sucks because your just trying to catch up and it’s hard.

wait till you do 42 years of it. I certainly know what you're saying by not replacing staff. Don't let this get the better of you because it's not going to change. You're too young to get stressed out, go with the flow and prioritize.

They should pay you and the other person the amount they’d pay the 3rd who didn’t work. I ran multiple horse and animal businesses and if someone was away, and the others picked up the slack, they got paid more. So sad this isn’t universal and mandatory. If I’m paying for 3 employees and 2 show up and do the job, they split the 3rd persons pay because the jobs still need to be done regardless if it’s 2 or 3 people. Some of my employees LOVED when people didn’t show up haha extra money day! (And extra work lol)

You guys are truly tough. Thank you for showing up everyday. Your resilence is important to those depending on your care. You guys deserve so much more.

I work in the public health system, this happens ALOT as well. I hear you, I understand your frustration, you are doing good work, it’s hard when you are a compassionate empathetic person. Hang in there, vocalize your frustration to management. It often falls on deaf ears but at least you can get satisfaction out of annoying management constantly reminding them how terrible they are at their job.

Home support (not with Island Health) is the way to go. I started my own small company and I make double what someone in a facility makes an hour and I can choose my clients and my workload. The stress is way less and I thoroughly enjoy my job. Most of what I do is companionship at this point rather than the care aide side of it (for health reasons). I work Mon-Fri 8:30-4:30pm and weekends off. I know care homes need aides but your mental health is more important.

I worked on a dementia unit for 7yrs at a ‘for profit’ care home. We were chronically short staffed, underpaid, and morale was so low. I eventually got burnt out. Of course I loved my residents and showed up for them but ugh! It was awful.

If 3 people are scheduled normally and only 2 people are working, those 2 should split the third person’s pay. (Not leaving full time without pay for sick leave or whatever). You are doing the work of 3 people. Period!
