The Taco Bell on Highway 8 was supposed to close at two. I knew because I worked there. That night, I was alone. My manager left at 1:30. I stayed behind to finish cleaning. At 1:47, the dining room lights went out. I looked toward the switch. Nobody was near it. I turned them back on. A few seconds later, they went out again. Then I heard the front door open. The little bell above it rang. I looked up. Nobody walked in. The door slowly swung shut. I locked it. I checked the dining room. Empty. Then I heard something from the bathroom. Three knocks. I stood there listening. Knock. Knock. Knock. I called out, “We’re closed.” Something knocked again. This time, from inside the wall. I stopped breathing. My phone vibrated. It was my manager. Something stepped into the kitchen. I couldn’t see its body. Only its hand. It reached around the doorway. The fingers curled against the wall. Then it pulled itself forward. I ran. I climbed through the drive-thru window and hit the pavement hard. I didn’t stop until I reached my car. I locked the doors. Then I looked back. The restaurant was completely dark. Except for the drive-thru speaker. It suddenly turned on. Static filled the car. Then a voice came through. My voice. “Can I take your order?” I stared at the building. The speaker crackled again. This time, the voice whispered my name. I drove home. The next morning, my manager called. He told me the security footage had been recovered. I asked what it showed. He was silent for a long time. Then he said, “You never left through the window.” I felt cold. “What?” “You were still inside when the police arrived.” I didn’t answer. He continued. “They found you standing behind the counter.” “That wasn’t me.” “I know.” Another silence. “Because the person they found was facing the wall.” I asked him what happened next. He said the police turned the person around. It had my face. But there was one problem. It didn’t have a mouth. And when they turned away for a second, it was gone.
