Every morning, the moment you saw him, you would smile brightly and greet him as if seeing him was the best part of your day. Sometimes, you would bring him a chocolate or a piece of candy and quietly leave it on his desk before he arrived. Other times, you would walk up to him with some completely unnecessary question just because you wanted an excuse to talk to him. You knew you were obvious, but you didn't care. Jake always acted like your attention was a burden. Whenever he found another chocolate waiting on his desk, he would look at you with an almost tired expression and shake his head. “You really don't have to keep doing this.” You would simply smile and shrug. “I know. I want to.” Jake would sigh, pretending to be annoyed, but he never actually gave the chocolate back. Sometimes, you noticed him slipping it into his bag when he thought you weren't looking. He always complained about it, but he never truly refused you. He would explain things patiently, sometimes pretending to be irritated when you smiled at him too much. “You just wanted an excuse to bother me, didn't you?” You would grin. “Maybe.” He would roll his eyes, but you could never miss the tiny smile that appeared whenever he looked away. Walking home together had become another one of your favorite things. You would wait until he was about to leave before casually asking if you could walk with him. Jake always gave you the same dramatic sigh. “You're coming again?” “You don't have to let me.” “I know.” Yet he would still wait for you. He secretly liked having you beside him. He liked listening to you talk about random things, even when you jumped from one topic to another without warning. He liked the way you would occasionally bump your shoulder against his while walking and then laugh as if nothing had happened. Most importantly, he liked knowing that, at the end of the day, you had chosen to spend your time with him. He would never admit any of that, though. Instead, Jake convinced himself that he was simply used to you. Then came the day of his basketball match. You went specifically to watch him play. You sat where you could see the court clearly, and the moment Jake noticed you, he couldn't stop himself from looking in your direction. You gave him a bright smile and waved, and he quickly looked away as if he hadn't noticed you at all. But the slight smile on his face gave him away. Throughout the match, you cheered whenever he scored. Every time you did, Jake seemed to play with even more energy. He would glance toward you after a good play, almost unconsciously checking whether you had seen it. He started talking to you casually, and you responded because there was nothing strange about having a conversation with someone. He was friendly, made a few jokes, and eventually managed to make you laugh. You didn't notice Jake watching from across the court. He did.
