If any of these objects caught your attention, I recommend reading the piece that is about to come out on Substack. You can read the article without subscribing, but if you want to receive it directly in your email this evening, I recommend subscribing. You can find the link in bio 💌 🪶 Symbolism & Amulets you might find in a Practitioner’s Home « I don’t know if you’ve ever happened to visit the home of someone who practices witchcraft. Well, if you’ve been lucky enough, they may have shown you something interesting. In my family, they had the bad habit of hiding any trace of any kind of practice or superstition, so I wasn’t very lucky. Apart from very rare cases in which the oral transmission of a practice was part of the ritual itself or of the tradition, I basically discovered everything else on my own. One of the most significant things I remember are the marks carved inside the house. In my family home, the house where my maternal grandmother was born and raised, these marks are located in very specific places around the windows, especially on the wooden frames, on the doors, and inside the fireplace. In my house, I also managed to find small sequences of symbols on the steps of the staircase. Just think, my grandmother, who came from an extremely poor family, used to tell me that in the bedrooms, instead of mattresses, they used fabric sacks filled with dried leaves. Tied with string to the sides of these mattresses were some kind of amulets made from tufts of horse or donkey hair. They believed that by leaving marks and amulets near passageways or areas of the house considered more vulnerable, the danger would be less imminent. And just as they did with the bed, they also used to place metal strainers near doors and windows. The idea was always the same. The evil spirit, unable to count beyond a certain number, as soon as it came across an object on its path that would force it to count past that number, would become disoriented. It would continue counting all night, keeping itself occupied and therefore avoiding getting close to the house, the stable, the animals, or the people. » #witchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft
