Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi once made a striking statement about Governor Charles Soludo: “He is even more intelligent than me because he is a professor; I am a trader.” But the context matters. Obi made the statement in November 2022 while responding to Soludo’s criticism of his record and presidential ambition. Rather than focusing only on their disagreement, Obi described Soludo as his brother and argued that, as a professor, Soludo had the opportunity to improve on areas where his own administration fell short. Why does this matter in Nigerian politics? First, it shows that political disagreement does not necessarily have to become personal hostility. Politicians can challenge each other’s records while still acknowledging one another’s strengths. Second, the statement raises an important question about academic credentials versus performance in public office. Being highly educated and being an effective political leader are not automatically the same thing. Ultimately, citizens can examine measurable results—such as infrastructure, education, security, jobs and management of public finances. Third, the comments remain relevant because Obi and Soludo are two prominent political figures from Anambra State, and their records and political positions continue to attract national attention. As Nigeria moves toward the 2027 elections, political debate will increasingly focus on records, policies and competing claims about governance.
