The Crime (January 1995) In early 1995, 18-year-old Christa Gail Pike, her 17-year-old boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, and 18-year-old classmate Shadolla Peterson were enrolled in the Knoxville Job Corps, a federal vocational program for low-income young adults. Pike became intensely jealous of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, another classmate whom she suspected of trying to "steal" her boyfriend. On the evening of January 12, 1995, Pike, Shipp, and Peterson lured Slemmer to a secluded, wooded area behind an old steam plant near the University of Tennessee campus. Over the course of roughly an hour, Slemmer was subjected to a brutal, prolonged assault. Pike and Shipp severely beat, slashed, and stabbed her using a meat cleaver and a smaller cutting instrument. A pentagram was carved into Slemmer's chest, fueling heavy media speculation about occult practices during the twilight of America's "Satanic Panic" era. Ultimately, Pike struck the fatal blows by fracturing Slemmer's skull with a large piece of asphalt. Following the murder, Pike kept a small fragment of Slemmer’s skull as a trophy and openly bragged about the crime to friends. The Trial and Convictions (1996) Following her arrest, Pike confessed to police, even recreating the events of the murder on video. On March 30, 1996, Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. • Christa Pike: At age 20, she was sentenced to death by lethal injection. This made her the youngest woman sentenced to death in the United States in the post-Furman modern era. • Tadaryl Shipp: Because he was 17 at the time of the offense, federal law protected him from capital punishment. He received a life sentence with the possibility of parole. • Shadolla Peterson: Acted as the lookout during the crime and subsequently turned state's witness. She received a sentence of probation. While serving her time on death row in August 2001, Pike was additionally convicted of attempted first-degree murder after trying to strangle a fellow inmate with a shoe string. The Current 2026 Legal Status After spending nearly three decades on Tennessee's death row as the state's lone female condemned prisoner, the state set her execution date for September 30, 2026. In the final days leading up to the execution, her defense attorneys launched an aggressive campaign for a reprieve, submitting a 226-page clemency petition. The petition spotlighted severe mitigating factors that her court-appointed trial lawyers originally failed to present to the 1996 jury: • A documented childhood of severe physical abuse, neglect, and parental abandonment. • Surviving multiple instances of sexual violence and rape at ages 11 and 17. • Severe, untreated mental illnesses, including prison diagnoses of bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Execution Outcome The effort to halt the death sentence was ultimately unsuccessful. On Monday, September 28, 2026, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee officially denied her clemency petition. The following day, the United States Supreme Court rejected an 11th-hour application for a stay of execution. Pike, now 50 years old, penned a final letter through her spiritual adviser stating she was "at peace" but naturally nervous about the execution protocol. With all legal avenues exhausted, she remains scheduled for execution on September 30, 2026, making her the first woman put to death by the State of Tennessee in over 200 years (since 1819). #christapike #execution #fyp
