The last Birthday of Kabaka Mutesa at Mengo, 1965. 1966 crisis of Uganda was the decisive political turning point that transformed the nation from a fragile constitutional arrangement into a centralized republic dominated by executive and military force. At the center of the conflict was the bitter fallout between Prime Minister Milton Obote and Sir Edward Mutesa II, the Kabaka (King) of Buganda who also served as Uganda's ceremonial president. At independence in 1962, Obote's party, the Uganda People's Congress, had formed an unstable governing coalition with the royalist Kabaka Yekka party. Deep-seated ideological differences soon broke the alliance apart. Obote sought a unified national identity and centralized state control, whereas the Kabaka and the Buganda establishment strove to protect the traditional autonomy and economic privileges granted to their kingdom under the independence constitution. Tensions heightened over territorial and political disputes, most notably the 1964 lost counties referendum, in which Obote transferred contested territories from Buganda back to the neighboring Bunyoro kingdom. Relationships deteriorated further during the 1965 gold scandal, in which Obote, along with army deputy commander Idi Amin, faced allegations of corruption regarding smuggled goods from the Congo. Fearing a political plot by cabinet members allied with the Kabaka, Obote launched a preemptive strike in February 1966. He arrested five rival cabinet ministers, suspended the 1962 constitution, and assumed full executive authority. In April 1966, Obote forced through a new interim constitution often nicknamed the pigeonhole constitution which abolished Buganda's semi-federal autonomy and installed Obote as executive president. The feud reached its dramatic climax in May 1966 when the Buganda parliament passed a resolution demanding that the central government evacuate Buganda land. Obote treated the resolution as treason and declared a state of emergency. On May 24, 1966, central government troops commanded by Colonel Idi Amin launched a heavy assault on the Kabaka's palace at Mengo Hill. After intense fighting, the palace was taken, though Kabaka Mutesa II managed to escape into exile in the United Kingdom. The 1966 crisis resulted in the total abolition of traditional monarchies across Uganda, established a precedent of executive authoritarianism, and set the country on a trajectory of military dominance that shaped its governance for decades. This archival footage of the 1966 Ugandan crisis captures news clips and historical context on the political unrest and military intervention that took place during the conflict. #fypシ゚viral #UgandaHistory #UgandaPolitics #ugandatiktok🇺🇬
