The room was quiet except for the rain. Not the pretty kind. It struck the windows in angry bursts, rattling the glass whenever the wind rose. She should have been asleep. Instead, she sat curled beneath her blankets, a book balanced on her knees. “Just one more chapter.” The same lie she’d told herself three chapters ago. Her lamp cast a warm circle over the pages while the rest of the room disappeared into shadow. Cold tea sat beside her. Her phone had died around midnight. None of it mattered.Because he was back. There was something wrong with falling for a fictional man. Especially this one. He wasn’t good. Possessive. Cruel. Violent when provoked and sometimes when he wasn’t. Every red flag had been stitched into one beautifully damaged man. She adored him. Not because she wanted to fix him. She liked him exactly as he was. “Men like you don’t exist,” she murmured. Something creaked. She glanced toward the darkness.Nothing. “Definitely time for bed.” But she kept reading. One page became five. Five became ten. Eventually, the words blurred. Her head slipped against the pillow, the book still open on her chest. “Sleep.” The mattress dipped. She didn’t wake. A shadow moved through the room. Slowly. Deliberately. The man beside her bed stared down at her. There she was. Finally. The woman who whispered his name into empty rooms. Who smiled at his darkest thoughts. Who defended him when others called him monstrous. Who loved him because she believed he existed safely behind ink and paper. His gaze lowered to the book. His book. Hundreds of pages attempting to contain him. Then her eyes opened. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black. One hand braced against the mattress beside her hip. She sucked in a breath to scream. His hand covered her mouth. “Don’t.” She knew that voice. Impossible. The book slid to the floor. “No,” she whispered. She stared at the scar near his eyebrow, the one described in chapter three, and the dark eyes she’d imagined a thousand times. He removed his hand. She scrambled against the headboard. “You’re not real.” “Careful.” His gaze dropped to her mouth. “You’ve spent months saying I’m the only man you’ve ever wanted.” Heat rushed into her face. “You weren’t supposed to hear that.” “I heard everything.” Her stomach dropped. He picked up one of the black tabs beside her lamp. “You marked my first appearance. Every threat. Every jealous scene. Every time I lost control.” His mouth curved. “And this enthusiastic collection begins around chapter twenty-seven.” Her face burned. “This is a dream.” “Then wake up.”She pinched her arm. “Ow.”His quiet laugh sent a chill through her. He picked up the book and studied the man on the cover.“They got my jaw wrong.” A laugh escaped her before she could stop it.He tossed the book between them. “You fell asleep reading about me.” “I do that a lot.”“I know.”Her smile disappeared.“What do you mean?”He moved closer.“Every time you opened that book, I felt you. Every page. Every word. Every time you came back.”His gaze locked with hers.“You thought you were reading my story. Eventually, I started reading yours.” Her blood went cold. “You watched me?”“Yes.”“For how long?”“Long enough.”“That isn’t an answer.”“It wasn’t meant to be.”There he was. Infuriating. Arrogant. Terrifying.Exactly as she’d fallen for him. “Why are you here?”His expression changed.“You really don’t know?”She shook her head. His fingers brushed a strand of hair from her cheek.“You called me your favorite. You said you’d choose me.”His thumb traced her jaw.“You said if I were real, you’d never let me leave.”She remembered. A joke whispered alone at two in the morning. He leaned toward her ear.“You should be careful what you promise things that aren’t supposed to hear you.”A shiver traveled down her spine.”So what happens now?”His eyes darkened. “You spent all that time wishing I were real.”He closed the book. “So I’m giving you exactly what you asked for.”Her heartbeat stumbled.“What did I ask for?”He switched off the lamp. ME!
