The Book of Revelation, the Apocalypse, or whatever you want to call it,almost none of it means exactly what it literally says. Almost all of it is symbolic. How did I come to that conclusion? Well, it is revealed by other verses that explain the symbolism. We Christians believe that not everyone who reads the Bible will understand it, you have to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Why would a Christian and an atheist have different understandings of the Bible? Because an atheist might read the Bible expecting to find it ridiculous. If you read something with the intention of finding it ridiculous or nonsensical, your brain will naturally look for things that confirm that conclusion, even though, in reality, you may have missed a lot of details. And you shouldn't expect to read the Bible cover to cover and automatically understand it. If you really want to understand it, you need guides that lead you to other verses related to what you're reading. Everything in the Bible is scattered throughout the book because it was written by 40 men who lived in different eras for 1500 years.
