@c5news: Gene Breeden was one mile into his journey when things took a dramatic turn for the worse. The truck driver choked on his drink while behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound truck. Footage from his cab, which is being shared on LinkedIn as a warning to drivers to park up to eat and drink, shows him appearing to choke and then lose control of the truck. Mr Breeden is thrown around the cab, then appears to lose consciousness. Rob Carpenter shared the footage, writing that Mr Breeden “didn't do anything wrong, and there was nothing he could have done once it started”. Mr Carpenter said the industry “spends a lot of energy on the crashes someone chose: speed, phones, hours, bad hiring. Those deserve every bit of it.” He added that a study by the US government agency, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Large Truck Crash Causation found that 12% of the cases “Where the truck was assigned the critical reason, the driver fell asleep, had a heart attack or seizure, or was physically impaired in some other way”. “That's the category nobody wants to talk about, because there's no villain. It isn't always survivable,” he added. He cited another case, near Davis, California in March 2013, where a driver chocked on food he was eating while driving, lose consciousness, crossed every eastbound lane of the I-80 and “two people in a BMW died”. “So, here's the one thing inside your control: eat parked. Drink parked if you can. A sandwich is not worth a mile of highway with nobody steering. For everybody else out there: when you see a truck drifting, give it room. This is classic Aspiration/ Laryngospasm, caused by liquid entering the lungs. The lungs will not tolerate even a tiny drop of liquid to enter and will temporarily close off the windpipe as a safety measure.
