Sometimes a prayer is accepted without even being verbally asked for, simply as a result of expressing one’s pain. Therefore, there are certain qualities and states of heart behind the acceptance of prayer that one must also adopt. Merely expressing pain is not enough. In particular, when someone who is patient expresses their pain, it has a very deep effect on the heart. In ordinary human affairs, I have observed that some people express pain over the smallest of matters. Even when they ask for something, one does not feel inclined to give it to them. On the other hand, there are some people who are not accustomed to asking. They remain silent and continue to endure, exercising patience upon patience. But when their patience finally breaks, one’s heart begins to ache for them involuntarily, and one says, “He must be in great pain if he has finally stretched out his hands like this…” Therefore, whenever you recite the prayers of the Qur’an, recite them with those attitudes and expressions of the heart through which prayers are then accepted. Some people tell me, “Please write a prayer for us so that we can keep reciting it.” Others say, “We have been continuously reciting this particular prayer. We sit on the prayer mat for hours and keep repeating it. Yet our prayer has still not been accepted.” But how can it be accepted without the right attitude and expression of the heart? Love is evoked by one’s manner and attitude, not merely by words. Sometimes an ordinary person says the exact same thing and it makes one angry. But when someone whom one has grown to love says the same thing, it evokes affection instead. Love is a psychological state, and the acceptance of prayer is connected with this love. As the poet has said: «“They become angry when we show them love; We fall in love when they become angry.”» The relationship between the two is such that one person feels hatred while the other feels love. The one who feels hatred says, “We love this person,” and he becomes angry with us. Yet our state is such that when he becomes angry, we feel even more love for him. Similarly, when it comes to prayer, it is not merely a matter of words—that you simply begin repeating the words of a prophet. The Holy Qur’an has mentioned the spiritual states and circumstances surrounding these prayers. It has described the morals and qualities of these prophets and their relationship with Allah. It first presents a background and spiritual state, and then teaches the prayer within that context. If a person strives to develop that spiritual background within themselves—even if they cannot become exactly like those prophets, at least they can make an effort—and then pray, they will never pray in vain. #islam #ahmadiyya #dua #pain #sabr
