I actually genuinely think he was possessed by the mistress and he didn’t know what on Earth he was doing and now he’s back to reality and he regrets it so much. The whole situation is very sad, that family is ruined and they will never trust anyone again. The mistress had a big role in the whole thing and it’s actually unbelievable that she is just getting away with it.
