🌍🇩🇪"After almost 400 years of tradition: The legendary Hofbrauhaus Wolters from Braunschweig collapsed under the weight of the beer crisis❗" In the heart of Lower Saxony, in the historic city of Braunschweig, one of the longest chapters of German brewing has just ended. The company "Hofbrauhaus Wolters GmbH", whose roots go back to "1627", has filed for insolvency proceedings under the self-administration regime (Eigenverwaltung). This traditional brewery, which boasted the title Herzogliches Hofbrauhaus and was the largest private brewery in the region, was unable to cope with a long-term decline in demand and a dramatic increase in costs. Despite almost four centuries of continuous brewing, six generations of the Wolters family and decades of local dominance, the brewery is now fighting for survival. The main reasons are persistently weak sales and significantly higher production, energy and logistics costs - problems that have plagued the entire German brewing industry for several years. However, operations are continuing for the time being and all employees' wages remain secured. The aim of the insolvency proceedings is a comprehensive restructuring and finding new economic stability. Germany has been experiencing a real "beer crisis" in recent years. In 2025, nationwide beer sales fell to an all-time low of just "7.8 billion liters", a year-on-year decline of 6%. According to the German Brewers' Association (Deutscher Brauer-Bund), "137 breweries" have closed down in the last six years. Traditional medium-sized and smaller breweries are facing double pressure: changing consumer habits (fewer pubs, more non-alcoholic alternatives) and high operating costs in a time of energy crisis and inflation. Hofbrauhaus Wolters is therefore not an isolated victim, but another symbol of the profound transformation that the German brewing industry is undergoing. Iconic brands such as Wolters Pilsener or Schwarze Herzog may survive, but under new ownership or in a different form. This case shows how fragile the legacy of centuries-old traditions is in a modern economy, where even 399 years of history are no longer enough to guarantee survival. #HofbrauhausWolters #Braunschweig #NemeckePivo #GermanBeer Sources and facts: Official statement of Hofbrauhaus Wolters GmbH (June 2026), Braunschweiger Zeitung, Statistisches Bundesamt (beer sales 2025), Deutscher Brauer-Bund
