He had a £51m release clause in his contract which wasn’t unusual considering Dortmund didn’t expect him to be so prolific so quickly when he arrived from RB Salzburg. The reason why other clubs didn’t trigger it is because he agents were demanding a £75m release clause in any agreement he made with other clubs which they saw as too much of a risk because it didn’t represent a good profit for his potential and it didn’t provide long term security for the investment. Manchester City triggered the release clause and offered to increase his wage demand from £130k per week to £200k per week in exchange for a much bigger release clause close to £140m which they agreed to. With his most recent new contract, they removed all release clauses. Ultimately it was incredibly poor business in hindsight by Borussia Dortmund and they’ve since done away with release clauses to avoid it happening again.
