Idi Amin Dada, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979, gained widespread notoriety and, initially, popularity through a combination of charismatic, anti-colonial rhetoric, populist policies, and, later, his bizarre, brutal behavior. While he is now universally remembered as a ruthless dictator ("The Butcher of Uganda"), his rise to power was initially met with relief and enthusiasm by many.  Here are the key factors that made Idi Amin popular: Overthrow of a Disliked Predecessor: Amin seized power in a 1971 military coup against Milton Obote, whose government had become increasingly authoritarian and unpopular. Many Ugandans welcomed the change, viewing Amin as a liberator. Anti-Colonial and Nationalist Stance: Amin was seen by some as a fearless nationalist who stood up to Western powers, particularly the British. He styled himself as an unapologetic African leader, which garnered support during a time of post-colonial awakening. "Economic War" and Expulsion of Asians: In 1972, Amin ordered the expulsion of Uganda’s Asian population, who controlled a significant portion of the economy. While this caused economic collapse, it was initially applauded by some Ugandans who believed it was the return of economic power to "native" citizens. Charismatic and Eccentric Persona: Amin was known for his unpredictable, jovial, and sometimes humorous public demeanor. He engaged in populist actions, such as leading his cabinet in soccer matches, which made him appear approachable compared to traditional politicians. Grandiloquent Titles and Media Attention: He dubbed himself "His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al-Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular." His bizarre behavior, such as sending telegrams to world leaders and claiming to be the rightful King of Scotland, ensured he was constantly in the international media spotlight. Promotion of National Identity and Sport: He fostered a sense of national pride, notably through sports, including providing support to John Akii Bua, who won Uganda’s first Olympic Gold medal in 1972.  However, this popularity was fleeting and largely based on initial, populist actions. His regime was soon characterized by extreme brutality, with 100,000 to 500,000 people killed.
