When he began preaching monotheism, Mecca's ruling tribes persecuted his followers, forcing Muhammad to migrate to Medina in 622 CE—an event called the Hijra which marks the start of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, he built a powerful political and military community, eventually reclaiming Mecca peacefully in 630 CE and uniting the Arabian Peninsula under Islam.
