It was almost 2 AM when I realized we were out of milk. I didn’t want to go. But the convenience store was only five minutes away. So I grabbed my keys and left. The parking lot was completely empty. Even the gas pumps were dark. I walked inside. The cashier looked up at me. He didn’t say hello. He just stared. I grabbed the milk and walked toward the register. That’s when I noticed the store was completely silent. No refrigerator humming. No music. Nothing. I looked at the cashier. “Is everything okay?” He slowly pointed toward the security monitor. I looked at the screen. It showed me standing in the aisle. But there was someone standing directly behind me. I turned around. Nobody. I looked back at the monitor. The person was closer. I stepped toward the register. The cashier whispered, “Don’t look behind you again.” I froze. Then I heard footsteps behind me. One step. Then another. The cashier reached under the counter. “Just keep looking at me.” The footsteps stopped. Then something whispered right beside my ear. “Can I help you find something?” I jumped and turned around. Nothing. The cashier suddenly grabbed my arm. “Go.” I ran toward the door. It wouldn’t open. I pulled harder. The cashier started shouting. “Don’t let it see your face!” I looked at the glass. There was a reflection standing behind me. A tall person. Head tilted. Smiling. But when I looked back, the store was empty. The door suddenly unlocked. I ran outside. I didn’t stop until I reached my car. As I drove away, I looked in the rearview mirror. Nobody was following me. I thought it was over. Then my phone rang. The caller ID said: CONVENIENCE STORE I answered without thinking. Nobody spoke. Then I heard the cashier’s voice. He sounded terrified. “Why did you leave me in there?” I pulled over. “What?” He whispered, “You were the only customer.” I looked at the time. 2:17 AM. Then he said, “I closed the store three hours ago.” The call ended. I drove home. The next morning, I went back. There was no convenience store. Just an empty building with a FOR SALE sign on it. I called the number on the sign. The owner told me the store had been closed for six years. Then he asked me something I’ll never forget. “Did you happen to see the cashier?” I said yes. He went quiet.
