@rickysixsixsix: A disturbingly brutal, and extremely beautiful movie. Have you seen it? #disturbingmovies #disturbingfilms #horror #horrormovies #filmtok
Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark are both brilliant. They're also watch-once only films for me. They broke me.

i was 22 when this movie came out, and it was my first von trier, and intro to the fantastic work of Emily Watson. i was not a sheltered person but breaking the waves changed my life bc, I think the simplest way to put it, it introduced me to certain ways in which ppl can damage and destroy one another as well as ways in which we ourselves will destroy ourselves for another in the name of love. i also saw once were warriors for the first time that year and I rarely think of one without being reminded of the other. Though both films explore different stories there are shared themes, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the strength of women in contrast to the weakness of men as one of them. i appreciate your take and love that you covered this one. 🖤

Breaking the Waves one of his best films, imho, for all the reasons you’ve indicated. It’s just so deeply affecting, wrenchingly tragic. Pair it with Dancer in the Dark and I’ll just burrow down in some blankets and not exist for awhile.

It’s a great film but also one of the most upsetting films I’ve ever watched.

How old is this film? I realised it must have been out for a while when you mentioned Katrin Cartlidge, who has been dead for some years. She was brilliant in Naked. She was also in quite a few Mile Leigh films

I haaaaaaate Lars Von Trier. Because of this and dancer in the dark. He is so brutal! I like melancholia though.

I’ve seen it but not sure I could again. Only Dancing in the dark has upset me more than this film. Both totally traumatic to watch!

As others have said, the only other Von Trier film that’s more devastating is Dancer in the Dark.
