@theherculeannyc: Paul grew up in the same children’s home as Symon, and when we first meet him in Seven Up! he is a painfully shy little boy whose parents had divorced. He also famously asks, “What does university mean?”—a striking contrast to the privileged boys in the series who, at the same age, were already discussing which schools and universities they expected to attend. Soon after #sevenup, Paul’s life changed dramatically when his father and stepmother moved the family to Australia. He grew up there and eventually settled in the Melbourne area. His story isn’t about professional ambition or some dramatic reinvention—it is largely about creating the stable family life that was missing from his own childhood. Later in life, Paul and Susan began working together at a retirement village, where Paul looked after the units and gardens and did maintenance work. It’s a quietly fitting chapter for someone whose story has always seemed centered on usefulness, family and looking after other people. And then there is Symon. The friendship that began between two little boys in a children’s home survived Paul’s move to the other side of the world. The series reunited them several times over the decades, and in 63 Up, Symon and Vienetta traveled to Australia to visit Paul and Susan. Paul’s life may be one of the quieter stories in #7Up, but that’s also what makes it so moving. The frightened, uncertain little boy we met at seven ultimately found what he seemed to need most: stability, family, purpose—and a childhood friendship that lasted a lifetime. #70up #itv @ITV

So glad to see Paul thrive in his later years, considering that he spent his childhood in a home. Both him and Symon have done really well.

If he had a father, why was he in a children’s home? I’m in the US, maybe I’m misunderstanding, is a children’s home like foster care?

Are you able to summarize Neil? Of all the children covered I felt so sorry for him as he was such a bubbly lovely child and I suspect something happened around his university phase and his demeanor completely changed to the point that I wouldn’t have thought it was the same person. Is anyone aware of the deeper factors at play here that weren’t explicitly mentioned in the documentary? Thanks in advance
