Laura V. :
The French state is deeply indebted. The healthcare system works kinda well for now because they're indebting future generations like crazy, but it's simply not sustainable. Many economists are already warning that France could face a Greece-type crisis, yet most French people have very little understanding of economics and don't even realise what's coming. That's probably why they seem so carefree about everything.
Also, you've probably noticed the privileged people in Paris, especially those who inherited Parisian real estate. Because in order to finance all the freebies and distribute benefits to everyone, workers are heavily taxed. Actually, EVERYTHING is heavily taxed in France. If you don't inherit wealth in this country, good luck getting anywhere financially.
People spend 5 years studying after high school, often in incredibly stressful and competitive academic programmes, only to end up earning €2,000 a month. And even getting those jobs is a struggle because the job market is ridiculously competitive. Meanwhile, businesses are suffocating under taxes and administrative burdens, and so many end up closing.
The craziest part is that working hard and getting a good education doesn't even guarantee you a decent standard of living anymore. Meanwhile, someone who inherited an apartment in Paris is already miles ahead of someone who spent years studying and working their ass off.
Believe me, the French system is NOT sustainable at all. I've been to Cuba, and year after year I genuinely feel like France is getting closer to that kind of system. Obviously it's not the same situation, but the direction things are going in is honestly worrying.
