@travelwithnoon: Florida once passed a divorce law, and Henry Flagler is the only man known to have used it. Flagler built Standard Oil with Rockefeller, then built the grand hotels of Palm Beach. His second wife, Ida Alice, held séances and told people the Czar of Russia was going to marry her. In 1895 she was committed, and New York law gave him no way to divorce her. So he made Florida his legal home. In 1901 Florida made incurable insanity grounds for divorce, and Flagler was accused of buying the law. Ten days after his divorce he married Mary Lily Kenan and built her Whitehall. Four years later, the law was repealed. When Flagler died in 1913, most of his fortune went to Mary Lily. Four years later, her own family had her body dug up in the middle of the night. Part two tells you why. Ida Alice was left so well provided for that her money earned over $400,000 a year while her care cost about $25,000.

Flagler's railroad didn't stop at Palm Beach. In 1912, the year before he died, it crossed the open sea to Key West.
