@hooverinstitution: How should the government raise revenue while doing the least amount of long-run economic damage? Hoover Senior Fellow John H. Cochrane argues it should eliminate income, corporate, estate, excise, and all other taxes—and tax consumption instead. Yeah, sure. A consumption tax is in effect a tax on the poor. Like the lottery.

No…tax the super rich on unrealized income, and close all other loopholes on those above 100 million.

Consumption tax is a regressive tax. Why should the person with the lowest ability to pay to have to pay at the same rate as the person with the highest ability to pay? Divide total individual wealth by every man, woman, and child, you get almost half a million each. I am not saying to just take the wealth and distribute it. I'm just illustrating how much wealth we are talking about. What needs to happen is the wealthy must be incentified to pump their wealth back into the economy.

Consumption taxes are regressive. A system like this will greatly increase the tax burden for the working class, reduce taxes for the wealthiest and stunt economic growth

Just FYI, the lower and middle class end up paying upwards of 10% of their income with this kind of tax system especially without everyday necessities excluded. One you get up to $5M the percentage rate drops to below 1%. Who’s this really going to benefit?

Great! The real rich will pay less and the poor will pay the same or more. No thank you! I pay 20+% , I want to see the billionaires and corporations paying the same! I want to see the taxes going where they belong, not with ordinances, but education, social programs and infrastructure! Less bombs more food for the hunger!

this is just a massive tax increase on the working class and a massive tax cut for the wealthy. we spend the vast majority of our money on goods and services and they hoarde the vast majority of theirs.

Tax consumption. Exempt food and certain levels of housing, transportation and medical care. Those that spend the most are taxed control. The founding fathers were against direct taxes.

Regressive tax and will increase the wealth gap, cause you can only consume so much. Poor people have to spend most their earnings 👍

Basically, if your capital deployment skills are superior to everyone else then, given enough time, you can effectively rule the entire human race. Capital wins. Humanity loses.

With a consumption tax, no one is immune to it. I just want to know what the tax would be. State & local is 7%(average) I say no more than 3%!

The consumption tax rate would be 37%. So groceries would increase to astronomical levels and the car industry would bottom out

No. Just make a flat rate of 10% and every person and corporation pay it on any form of compensation or profit
